The Background

Manchester Youth Zone is a landmark facility located to the North-East of Manchester, in the centre of Harpurhey.

Designed to stand on a huge site on Rochdale Road, this iconic building will provide its users with the chance to choose from a range of activities from; music and creative arts to fitness training, a re-fuelling stop between the climbing wall and the rowing machine. It will also offer young people the chance to meet friends and chat over a snack, or a place to access informal education and/or support services at a time and in an environment that the young people choose.

Renamed The Factory Youth Zone, following a branding consultation exercise with young people in the area, this iconic building has been designed so that its users will feel they can adopt it as their own, whilst establishing their place in the local community.

The enthusiasm from within Manchester for the Factory Youth Zone has been irrepressible with the Council, the private sector and young people all working hard together to bring something wonderful to the City.

Why Harpurhey?

Over the last fifty years, Harpurhey has witnessed a large loss of employment, investment and dispersed population. This has resulted in Manchester’s young people and those in-particular in the north of the city, experiencing a range of poverty and deprivation on a scale almost unprecedented in England. As one of the most deprived wards in the country, Harpurhey was identified as a location that would hugely benefit from the Youth Zone model.

The challenge

Harpurhey’s participation levels for 13-19 year olds have been extremely low in the past, The Factory Youth Zone will tackle this issue head on, offering a range of services for young people whilst providing a range of sports, arts, recreational and mentoring opportunities.

OnSide is supporting the development of strong cross-sector partnerships towns and cities in the North West and has successfully led the application to the myplace fund for Manchester Youth Zone.
