Mahdlo (Oldham) Youth Zone will stand on a generous site at the heart of the town centre just yards from the bus interchange.
In common with all OnSide projects, Mahdlo (Oldham) Youth Zone will offer an accessible and affordable universal service of exciting and positive activities for young people alongside targeted information, advice, guidance and support projects.
Mahdlo will be operated by a new charitable body, which will be governed by young people, representatives of the local business community and voluntary sector, alongside the local authority officers providing a strategic lead, and will become a key element of Oldham’s community cohesion strategy.

Why Oldham?
The borough of Oldham has a younger age structure than the national average, with 20.7% of people aged under 15 years old. Over recent years the borough has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour. As a result the increase in ASB has become a key concern for residents.
In 2008 the You and Your Community survey conducted in Oldham showed that all wards within the borough considered the level of crime, clean streets and activities for teenagers priorities for improvement. Mahdlo (Oldham) Youth Zone is a direct response to these calls to action.
The Challenge
A key focus for the new Youth Zone will be to tackle the breakdown of community cohesion. With a proportion of residents from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups, at nearly 5% higher than the national average, a real emphasis will be placed on breaking down barriers to participation and encouraging integration of community groups within Mahdlo. The aim will be to create an environment that fosters youth engagement in its programmes area and services.
OnSide is supporting the development of strong cross-sector partnerships towns and cities in the North West and has successfully led the application to the myplace fund for Oldham Youth Zone.
